Fraction Riddles (harder)

Welcome to the Math Salamanders Free Printable Fraction Worksheets: Fraction Riddles (harder).

Here you will find some printable fraction riddles to help your child
understand about improper and equivalent fractions are and solve problems involving these fractions.

These Fraction Riddles are aimed at children around 4th and 5th grade.

What is a fraction?

A fraction is a number which contains parts of a whole.

Fractions can be smaller than or larger than one (one whole).

A fraction is a number with the form: \[{n \over d} \]

where n and d are two numbers.

The number n above the line is called the *numerator*.

The number d below the line is called the *denominator*.

If the numerator is smaller than the denominator (if n < d),
then the fraction is called a *proper fraction*,
and its value is less than 1.

If the numerator is greater than the denominator (if n > d), then the
fraction is called an *improper fraction*, and its value is greater than 1.

If the numerator is equal to the denominator, then the fraction's value is equal to 1.

A *mixed number (or mixed fraction)* is a number that has
a whole number part to it, and a fraction part to it.

\[{3 \over 7}, {2 \over 10} \; and \; {17 \over 26} \] are all proper fractions.

\[ {31 \over 5}, {15 \over 10} \; and \; {37 \over 23} \] are all improper fractions.

\[ 3{1 \over 5}, 2 {5 \over 8} \; and \; 4 {1 \over 2} \] are all mixed numbers or mixed fractions.

The worksheets on this page consist of 3 or 4 clues and a set of 8 possible answers. Using the clues, you have to work out which of the answers are correct.

The terms 'multiple' and 'factor' are also used in these sheets.

These free printable fraction worksheets are suitable for children at around a 4th grade level.

In this section, there is a much wider range of improper fractions and mixed numbers to compare.

The clues will test whether children can convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.

The concept of an improper fraction being more or less than a given amount is also explored.

These strips will help children to answer some of the clues and work out whether or not the fraction is larger or smaller than a half.

There are a variety of fraction strips with fractions equivalent to halves, thirds, fourths and fifths.

The Fraction Riddles on this webpage are at a simpler level than those here.
